A tween deck (short for “between deck”) is an intermediate deck level built within a cargo hold, dividing the hold’s vertical space into two or more separate compartments rather than leaving it as one large open space from the bottom to the main deck.
Why Tween Decks Exist
A single large, undivided hold works fine for bulk or uniform cargo, but general cargo — mixed goods, varied packaging, different destinations — often benefits from being subdivided. Tween decks allow different cargo to be stowed in separate levels, improving stowage flexibility, protecting lower cargo from the weight of cargo stowed above, and simplifying loading/discharge sequencing for multi-port voyages.
Practical Benefits of Tween Deck Subdivision
- Weight distribution — spreading cargo weight across multiple levels rather than concentrating it all at the bottom of a deep hold
- Cargo protection — preventing heavier cargo from crushing more delicate cargo stowed beneath it in an undivided hold
- Segregation — keeping different cargo types or different destination cargo separated for easier, more organized handling
- Access — tween deck hatches allow direct access to intermediate cargo without needing to move cargo stowed above or below it
Tween Decks and General Cargo Ships Specifically
Tween decks are a defining structural feature of traditional general cargo ships, distinguishing them from bulk carriers (typically single large holds) and container ships (which use cellular guides rather than solid intermediate decks). As containerization has taken over much of general cargo trade, vessels with true tween deck arrangements have become less common, though they remain relevant on break-bulk and project cargo vessels.
Movable/Removable Tween Decks
Some vessels feature movable or removable tween deck panels, allowing the hold to be reconfigured — used as a full-depth open hold for bulk-type cargo, or subdivided with tween decks in place for mixed general cargo — genuine operational flexibility matched to whatever cargo a specific voyage requires.
