The transom is the flat, or near-flat, structural panel forming the stern of most modern merchant ships β the rear-facing surface of the hull.
Why Modern Ships Use Transom Sterns
Older ship designs often tapered the hull to a point at the stern, similar to the bow. The transom stern β a flatter, wider design β became standard on most modern vessels because it provides more usable hull volume near the stern, better structural characteristics for supporting the propeller and rudder, and generally improved hydrodynamic performance at typical merchant ship speeds.
Structural Role
The transom forms a major structural bulkhead-like panel at the extreme aft end of the vessel, integrated with the surrounding hull framework and providing the structural termination point for the shipβs shell plating at the stern.
Whatβs Located at the Transom
The transom area typically houses or is near:
- The rudder stock penetration through the hull
- The propeller shaft exit (on single-screw vessels, positioned to work with the transomβs shape)
- Often stern mooring equipment and, on some vessel types, a stern ramp (Ro-Ro vessels) or other stern-specific fittings
