Tidal range is the vertical difference in water level between high water and low water at a given place and time β calculated simply as the height of high water minus the height of low water, read directly off tide tables or tide gauges.
Why Tidal Range Isnβt a Fixed Number
Tidal range at the same port changes throughout the month and the year, driven by the relative positions of the Sun and Moon:
- Spring tides β the Sun and Moon align (new moon and full moon), producing the largest tidal range at that location. See Spring Tide.
- Neap tides β the Sun and Moon are at right angles to each other (first and last quarter moon), producing the smallest tidal range. See Neap Tide.
Tidal range also varies enormously by geography. The Bay of Fundy in Canada records tidal ranges over 15 metres β among the largest in the world β while many open-ocean islands see well under a metre. Along the Indian coast, ports like Kandla and the Gulf of Khambhat see a notably large tidal range compared to much of the west coast, which is a genuine, practical factor in berth planning there.
Why Tidal Range Matters Operationally
- Under-keel clearance planning β a vessel with a tight margin between draft and charted depth may only be able to safely enter or leave a berth during a specific window around high water, when the tidal range adds enough extra depth. See Under-Keel Clearance.
- Berth and jetty design β fixed jetties and quay walls in ports with a large tidal range must be built tall enough to remain usable across the full range, and gangways/accommodation ladders need enough length to adjust.
- Cargo operations β in ports with large tidal ranges, loading/discharge rates and vessel trim are sometimes planned around the tide to keep the vessel safely afloat or, in some drying berths, deliberately let it take the ground at low water.
- Lock and gate timing β enclosed dock systems (common in the UK and parts of Europe) use lock gates specifically because their local tidal range is too large to leave berths permanently open to the sea; vessels transit the lock only within a tidal βwindow.β
Reading Tidal Range from Tide Tables
Official tide tables (and DGPS/electronic tide prediction tools) list predicted high and low water times and heights for each day at a given port. Tidal range for a specific tide is simply the difference between the listed high water height and the low water height immediately before or after it β officers use this figure, combined with chart datum and the vesselβs draft, to confirm safe under-keel clearance before entering a shallow port or channel.
