Why Redundancy Is Mandatory

How It Works (Simplified)
Helm orders (from the wheel, autopilot, or emergency controls) are converted into hydraulic power that moves rams or a rotary vane mechanism connected to the rudder stock, physically turning the rudder to the commanded angle.
Emergency Steering
If both main and auxiliary steering fail, vessels have an emergency steering procedure โ typically involving direct manual control at the steering gear compartment itself (aft, near the rudder stock), bypassing the bridge controls entirely, using hand-operated valves or a local control panel.
Steering Gear Testing
SOLAS requires steering gear testing before departure from port, including operating both main and auxiliary systems and verifying emergency steering procedures โ not an optional check, given the consequences of discovering a steering problem only once underway.
Steering Failure Response
A steering failure underway triggers an immediate emergency response โ sounding the alarm, informing the engine room, switching to auxiliary/emergency steering, and if in a traffic area, making appropriate sound signals and broadcasts to warn other vessels.
