How a Spreader Engages a Container
Each container has standardized corner castings (fittings) at its eight corners. The spreader lowers onto the container’s top four corners, and rotating twist locks at each corner engage and lock into the castings — a secure, standardized mechanical connection that allows safe lifting without needing slings or chains attached manually each time.
Telescopic (Adjustable) Spreaders
Modern spreaders are typically telescopic, able to extend or retract to match different standard container lengths — most commonly 20-foot, 40-foot, and 45-foot containers — allowing a single crane and spreader to handle the full range of container sizes without needing separate equipment for each.
Twin-Lift and Tandem-Lift Spreaders
High-productivity terminal cranes use specialized spreaders capable of lifting two 20-foot containers simultaneously (twin-lift) or, on the most advanced equipment, four containers at once (tandem-lift) — a genuine productivity driver for container terminals, directly affecting how quickly a large vessel can be worked.
Spreader Safety
Correct engagement of all four twist locks before lifting is a critical safety check — a container lifted with an improperly engaged twist lock risks dropping, a genuine hazard to personnel and equipment below. Spreader operators (or automated systems on modern equipment) verify correct engagement before each lift.
