Good spares management is a genuine risk-prevention discipline, not just inventory housekeeping.

Engine officers typically identify parts needed and raise requisitions, which shore-based technical/procurement departments action — ordering, arranging shipment to the next suitable port, and coordinating delivery timing with the vessel’s schedule.
