Why Grain Specifically Needs This
Grain is a free-flowing bulk cargo that can shift within a partially filled hold as the vessel rolls β unlike a completely full hold (where the cargo is packed tight against all surfaces with nowhere to move), a partially filled hold allows the grain surface to slope and potentially avalanche toward one side under sustained rolling, creating a dangerous, progressively worsening list.
How Shifting Boards Work
A shifting board is installed running fore-and-aft through the center of the hold (or at other calculated positions), physically dividing the grain cargo into separate sections. Even if grain within one section shifts, the board prevents it from moving into the adjacent section β containing the shift and limiting the resulting list to a manageable, calculated amount.
SOLAS Grain Regulations
The International Grain Code (referenced under SOLAS) sets out specific stability and securing requirements for grain cargo, including when shifting boards (or alternative approved methods, such as strapping/lashing the grain surface, or securing with saucers/feeder arrangements) are required based on the holdβs fill level and the calculated potential heeling moment from grain shift.
Alternatives to Shifting Boards
Modern grain loading increasingly uses alternatives to physical shifting boards β including bagging the top layer of grain, using synthetic securing methods (strapping the grain surface), or ensuring holds are filled sufficiently full that the grain has minimal room to shift in the first place. The Grain Code allows several approved methods; shifting boards are one traditional option among several compliant approaches.
Calculating Whether Shifting Boards Are Required
Whether a specific holdβs grain loading requires shifting boards (or another securing method) depends on calculated factors β the holdβs fill level, the vesselβs stability characteristics, and the heeling moment grain shift could theoretically produce β a real, mandatory calculation, not a general rule of thumb applied uniformly to every voyage.
