- Swell β waves that have traveled away from where they were generated (often a distant storm) and become more organized, with longer wavelength, more rounded crests, and a more regular, predictable period
A location can experience both simultaneously β locally wind-generated sea combined with swell arriving from a distant weather system, producing a combined, sometimes confused sea state.
