Roll is a ship’s rotational motion from side to side, rotating around the vessel’s longitudinal (bow-to-stern) axis — one of the six degrees of freedom of ship motion at sea.
What Causes Roll
Roll is primarily caused by wave action — waves striking the vessel from the side (beam seas) or at an angle produce the most pronounced rolling motion. Wind can also contribute, particularly on vessels with large above-water surface area (container ships, car carriers).
Roll and Natural Rolling Period
Every ship has a natural rolling period — the time it takes to complete one full roll cycle if disturbed and left to oscillate freely — determined largely by GM (metacentric height) and the ship’s beam. Counterintuitively:
- Higher GM produces a shorter, stiffer rolling period — quicker, more abrupt rolling motion
- Lower GM produces a longer, softer rolling period — slower, more comfortable rolling, but with less overall stability margin
This is why “more stable” (higher GM) doesn’t automatically mean “more comfortable” — excessive GM can actually produce uncomfortable, jerky rolling, which is why ship designers and loading officers balance stability requirements against reasonable rolling comfort.
Synchronous Rolling — A Real Danger
If a ship’s natural rolling period matches the encounter period of waves hitting the vessel, rolling can build up progressively larger with each wave (synchronous rolling), potentially reaching dangerous angles even in moderate sea conditions. Recognizing and avoiding this condition — typically by altering course or speed to change the wave encounter period — is a genuine, practical seamanship skill.
