A pilot ladder is a rope ladder rigged over a vessel’s side, providing the means for a marine pilot to safely climb aboard or disembark, typically while the ship is underway at reduced speed or at anchor.
Why Rigging Standards Are Strictly Regulated
Pilot transfer is a genuinely dangerous operation — a pilot climbing between a moving pilot boat and a moving ship, often in less-than-ideal weather. Improperly rigged pilot ladders (wrong length, poor securing, damaged steps, incorrect height above water) have caused real, documented pilot injuries and fatalities across the industry, which is exactly why SOLAS Chapter V mandates specific construction and rigging requirements.
Key Rigging Requirements
- Secure attachment points at deck level, able to bear the load safely
- Correct length so the ladder reaches the water safely without excess slack
- Spreader steps at intervals to prevent the ladder twisting against the ship’s side
- Adequate lighting for night transfers
- A safety line and lifebuoy ready at the boarding point
- Deck officer supervision during the actual transfer, not just ladder rigging beforehand
Combination Ladder Arrangements
On vessels with high freeboard, a pilot ladder is often combined with an accommodation ladder or mechanical pilot hoist for the upper portion of the climb — pure rope ladder climbs beyond a certain height are considered an unacceptable safety risk.
Crew Responsibility
Properly rigging and inspecting the pilot ladder before every transfer is a genuine, mandatory crew responsibility — not a minor housekeeping task, given the real consequences of getting it wrong.
