Lightering is the transfer of cargo, most commonly crude oil, between two vessels at sea or at a designated offshore location, typically used to reduce a large tankerβs draft so it can enter a port with depth restrictions.
Why Lightering Is Needed
Many of the largest crude oil tankers (VLCCs, ULCCs) are too deep-drafted to enter most ports when fully laden. Lightering removes a portion of the cargo offshore, reducing the vesselβs draft enough to safely proceed to berth β the removed cargo is transferred to a smaller vessel (or vessels), which may carry it onward or transport it separately.
How Lightering Operations Work
Two vessels come alongside each other at sea or in a designated anchorage, secured with fenders and mooring lines, and cargo is transferred via hoses connected between the ships β a genuinely complex, carefully coordinated operation given both vessels are moving with wind and sea conditions throughout.
Safety Considerations
Ship-to-ship transfer at sea carries real operational risk β collision risk during approach and mooring, cargo transfer safety (given the flammable nature of crude oil), and the inherent challenge of two large vessels operating in close proximity while both are subject to wind, current, and swell. Detailed operational plans and experienced personnel are essential.
