An isobar is a line drawn on a weather chart connecting all points of equal atmospheric pressure — the basic building block of every synoptic weather chart a deck officer reads.
Reading Isobar Spacing
The single most useful practical skill with isobars is reading their spacing:
- Closely spaced isobars — a steep pressure gradient over a short distance, meaning strong winds
- Widely spaced isobars — a gentle pressure gradient, meaning lighter winds
This is why a weather chart showing tightly packed isobars around a low-pressure system is an immediate visual warning of severe weather, without needing to read a single number.
Isobars and Wind Direction
Wind flows roughly parallel to isobars (not directly from high to low pressure, due to the Coriolis effect), circulating clockwise around high-pressure systems and anti-clockwise around low-pressure systems in the Northern Hemisphere (reversed in the Southern Hemisphere).
Isobars and Buys Ballot’s Law
This is the practical basis of Buys Ballot’s Law — in the Northern Hemisphere, if you stand with your back to the true wind, low pressure lies to your left. Understanding isobar circulation is what makes this rule of thumb work.
Isobars Around Weather Systems
- Closed circular/oval isobars around a low or high — the classic depiction of a pressure system’s center
- Tightly curved isobars near a tropical revolving storm — reflecting the extreme pressure gradient and dangerous wind speeds near a TRS center
