A hatch cover that leaks doesn’t just risk cargo damage — sustained water ingress into a cargo hold affects the vessel’s stability and, in serious cases, has been a documented contributing factor in actual vessel losses, particularly on bulk carriers. This is exactly why hatch cover integrity testing is treated as a genuine safety matter, not just a commercial cargo-protection concern.
Main Types of Hatch Covers
- Folding covers — hinged panels that fold up and stack, common on many general cargo and bulk carrier holds
- Rolling (sliding) covers — panels that roll on wheels to one side or both sides of the hatch opening, common on larger bulk carriers
- Pontoon covers — individual, non-hinged panels lifted on and off entirely by crane, often used on general cargo vessels
How Weathertight Integrity Is Tested
- Hose test — directing a water hose at pressure against the closed hatch cover’s seals and joints, checking for any leakage into the hold — a traditional, still widely used method
- Ultrasonic test — using an ultrasonic transmitter inside the closed hold and a detector outside, checking whether sound passes through any gap in the seal (sound passing through indicates a leak point) — increasingly the preferred method since it doesn’t require water and can be done without affecting cargo already loaded
Rubber Sealing and Compression
Hatch covers seal against a rubber gasket, compressed by the closing/securing mechanism (cleats, wedges, or hydraulic locking depending on the cover type) — the seal’s condition and correct compression are what actually determines weathertightness, making seal inspection and maintenance a genuine, recurring responsibility.
Pre-Departure Checks
Hatch cover condition and closure verification is a standard pre-departure check, particularly before a voyage expected to encounter heavy weather — confirming covers are fully closed, properly secured, and seals are in good condition before the vessel is genuinely exposed to open-sea conditions.
