Shipboard fire fighting is organized, trained crew response to fire aboard ship β combining knowledge of fire behavior, the correct extinguishing method for each fire type, and coordinated team response under SOLAS-mandated drills.
The Fire Triangle
Fire requires three elements simultaneously: fuel, oxygen, and heat (ignition source). Removing any one element extinguishes the fire β this is the basic principle behind every fire fighting method, whether cooling (removing heat), smothering (removing oxygen), or starving (removing fuel).
Fire Classes and Correct Response
- Class A (ordinary combustibles) β wood, paper, textiles; extinguished with water, foam, or dry chemical
- Class B (flammable liquids) β oil, fuel, paint; extinguished with foam, CO2, or dry chemical β never water, which can spread a liquid fire rather than extinguish it
- Class C (electrical) β energized electrical equipment; requires a non-conductive extinguishing agent (CO2, dry chemical) β never water, given the electrocution risk
- Class D (combustible metals) β rare aboard merchant ships but relevant in some machinery contexts; requires specialized dry powder agents
Using the wrong method for a given fire class isnβt just ineffective β it can genuinely make the situation more dangerous, which is exactly why correct fire class identification is drilled repeatedly.
Portable vs Fixed Fire Fighting
- Portable extinguishers β immediate, crew-operated response for smaller fires, positioned throughout the vessel matched to the fire risks of each specific area
- Fixed systems β CO2 flooding, foam, or water spray systems protecting larger spaces (engine room, cargo holds) that portable extinguishers alone couldnβt adequately handle
Organized Team Response
Real shipboard fire response follows a structured approach β muster, fire party organization (attack team, boundary cooling, communication), and coordinated action under the Master or designated fire officer, rather than uncoordinated individual response. This structure exists because an uncoordinated response to a real fire genuinely increases risk to the crew.
Mandatory Fire Drills
SOLAS requires regular fire drills, covering donning firefighting outfits, breathing apparatus use, hose handling, and simulated fire scenarios β genuine, practiced competency, not a paperwork exercise, since a real fire is exactly the wrong time to be learning equipment operation for the first time.
