A fender absorbs the impact energy when a vessel comes alongside a berth or another vessel, protecting both the ship’s hull and the shore structure from damage during berthing.
Why Fendering Matters
Even a careful, well-controlled berthing approach involves the vessel’s mass contacting the berth — without adequate fendering, this contact would damage the hull’s shell plating and the quay structure itself. Given the mass of even a moderately sized ship, the energy involved in berthing contact is genuinely significant, not a minor bump.
Common Fender Types
- Fixed quay fenders — permanently mounted along a berth, commonly rubber (cylindrical, cone, or specialized profile designs) engineered to absorb specific energy loads based on the vessel sizes expected at that berth
- Pneumatic (floating) fenders — large, air-filled rubber fenders, often used for ship-to-ship transfers or at berths without permanent fendering, since they float and can be positioned as needed
- Portable ship’s fenders — carried aboard for situations requiring additional protection beyond what the berth itself provides, or for use during ship-to-ship operations
Fender Design and Energy Absorption
Fenders are engineered to absorb a specific amount of kinetic energy (based on expected vessel size, approach speed, and berthing angle) while limiting the peak reaction force transmitted to both the ship’s hull and the berth structure — a genuine engineering calculation, not just “put something soft there.”
Ship-to-Ship Operations
Fendering is especially critical during ship-to-ship (STS) cargo transfer operations, where two vessels come alongside each other at sea or in a protected anchorage — large pneumatic fenders are specifically positioned and monitored throughout the operation, given the higher relative motion risk compared to a fixed berth.
Fender Condition and Inspection
Damaged or deteriorated fendering — whether on the ship or ashore — genuinely increases the risk of hull damage during otherwise routine berthing, making fender condition a real, practical concern worth noting during berth selection and berthing planning, not just the port’s problem to manage.
