Why It Matters
If a vessel runs aground or suffers bottom damage, the double bottom structure means the outer layer can be breached without immediately flooding the shipβs cargo holds or machinery spaces β the double bottom void absorbs the initial damage, giving the vessel a real chance of remaining afloat and stable rather than flooding catastrophically.
What the Double Bottom Space Is Used For
The space between the outer and inner bottom is not wasted β itβs typically used for:

Mandatory Requirement
Double bottom construction is mandated under SOLAS for most cargo ships above a certain size, specifically as a damage-survivability requirement β not an optional design choice left to individual shipbuilders.

A double-hulled tanker has both double bottom and double-sided protection; a standard double-bottom bulk carrier has bottom protection but not necessarily the same side protection.
