Damage stability describes how a vessel behaves after sustaining flooding — whether it remains afloat, how much it lists or trims, and whether it retains enough residual stability to avoid capsizing — as opposed to intact stability, which describes the ship’s normal, undamaged condition.
Damage Stability vs Intact Stability
- Intact stability — the vessel’s stability in its normal, undamaged condition; calculated for every loading condition before a voyage
- Damage stability — the vessel’s predicted behavior if specific compartments flood; calculated during design and verified through the ship’s approved stability booklet
A ship can have excellent intact stability and still have inadequate damage stability if its watertight subdivision is poor — the two are related but genuinely separate calculations.
SOLAS Subdivision Requirements
SOLAS Chapter II-1 requires ships to be designed so they can survive flooding in one or more adjacent compartments (the exact number depends on vessel type, size, and service) without sinking or capsizing — this is why transverse bulkheads are positioned and spaced according to regulatory calculation, not arbitrary design choice.
