A bilge pump removes water that accumulates in a shipβs bilges β the lowest internal points of the hull, below deck plates and machinery, where water naturally drains and collects from condensation, minor leaks, and washdown water.
Why Bilge Water Accumulates
Even a well-maintained ship accumulates some bilge water continuously β from machinery cooling systems, condensation, minor packing gland leaks, and deck washdown drainage. This is normal; the problem arises when itβs not regularly removed.
Why Unchecked Bilge Water Is a Real Risk
Accumulated bilge water isnβt just a housekeeping nuisance β enough water pooling low in the hull affects the vesselβs stability calculations (effectively a form of free surface effect) and, in the engine room specifically, can become a fire hazard if mixed with oil residue, or a flooding risk if a bilge alarm and pump system arenβt functioning correctly to catch a developing leak early.
Types of Bilge Pumps
- Fixed bilge pumps β permanently installed, connected to the bilge piping system, used for routine bilge water removal
- Portable/emergency bilge pumps β additional capacity for emergency situations, particularly relevant if the main system fails or a serious ingress of water occurs
- Emergency bilge suction β SOLAS requires an emergency bilge suction arrangement independent of the normal system, specifically for flooding emergencies
Oily Water Separator Connection
Engine room bilge water is typically oily (from machinery leaks and residues) and cannot simply be pumped overboard β it must pass through an oily water separator to meet MARPOL discharge limits before any overboard discharge, with the whole operation logged in the Oil Record Book.
Bilge Alarms
Modern vessels have bilge high-level alarms that alert the engine room watch if bilge water rises above a set level β a real, functioning early-warning system that must be tested regularly, since a bilge alarm failure could mean a developing leak goes unnoticed until itβs a much bigger problem.
