Ballast water management refers to the regulated handling of a ship’s ballast water — seawater taken aboard for stability and structural purposes — specifically to prevent the unintentional transfer of invasive aquatic organisms between different regions of the world.
Why It’s Regulated
Ships take on ballast water in one region and often discharge it in another, potentially carrying marine organisms, larvae, and pathogens along with it. Invasive species introduced this way have caused serious, sometimes irreversible ecological and economic damage in various regions worldwide — the reason this is treated as a serious environmental regulatory matter, not a minor operational detail.
The Ballast Water Management Convention
The IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention sets standards requiring vessels to either exchange ballast water in open ocean (away from coastal ecosystems) or, increasingly, treat ballast water using an approved treatment system before discharge.
Ballast Water Treatment Systems
Modern requirements increasingly mandate active treatment systems (using filtration, UV disinfection, chemical treatment, or similar technology) installed aboard the vessel, replacing the older practice of simple open-ocean exchange as the primary compliance method.
Ballast Water Record Book
Similar to the Oil Record Book, ballast operations must be logged in a Ballast Water Record Book, documenting when and where ballast was taken on, exchanged/treated, and discharged — subject to Port State Control inspection.
