A marine air compressor generates compressed air for several distinct uses aboard ship, the most safety-critical being starting air β the compressed air used to actually turn over and start large diesel engines, which (unlike a car) cannot be started with an electric starter motor alone.
The Three Main Uses of Compressed Air Onboard
- Starting air β turns the main engine and generators over to initiate combustion; stored in dedicated air receivers (bottles) at high pressure specifically for this purpose
- Control air β powers pneumatic control systems, valve actuators, and automation equipment throughout the engine room
- Service air β general-purpose compressed air for workshop tools, cleaning, and other non-critical uses
Why Starting Air Capacity Is a Real Regulatory Requirement
SOLAS requires vessels to carry sufficient starting air capacity for a minimum number of consecutive engine starts without recharging β a genuine safety margin, since a main engine that canβt be restarted (say, after an emergency stop in a critical maneuvering situation) is a serious operational risk, not just an inconvenience.
Air Receivers (Bottles)
Compressed air is stored in air receivers β pressure vessels rated for the working pressure, fitted with safety valves and drain points for removing condensed moisture. These receivers are themselves subject to periodic pressure testing and survey, given the real hazard a failing pressure vessel represents.
Two-Stage Compression
Marine starting air compressors are typically two-stage (or multi-stage) reciprocating compressors β compressing air in stages with intercooling between stages, since compressing air to the high pressures needed for engine starting in a single stage would generate excessive heat and reduce efficiency.
Moisture and Oil Separation
Compressed air carries moisture and, from the compression process itself, some lubricating oil carryover β both must be removed (via separators and regular receiver draining) since contaminated starting air can affect engine components and control system reliability.
