Abandon ship is the last-resort emergency procedure for evacuating a vessel when the Master determines the ship can no longer be safely kept afloat or occupied.
The Abandon Ship Signal
A series of more than six short blasts followed by one long blast on the ship’s whistle/alarm, distinct from other emergency signals — every crew member is trained to recognize this specific signal immediately.
The Procedure
- Muster — all crew report to their designated muster stations, wearing life jackets and appropriate protective clothing, as assigned on the muster list
- Headcount — muster station leaders confirm all assigned personnel are present and account for anyone missing
- Launch survival craft — lifeboats and/or liferafts are launched according to the ship’s arrangement and the specific emergency
- Board survival craft — crew board in the assigned order, prioritizing injured or vulnerable personnel
Why This Is the Most Drilled Scenario
Abandon ship drills, alongside fire drills, are mandated under SOLAS to occur at regular intervals — because the procedure only works reliably under real emergency stress if crew have practiced it enough times that the sequence is automatic, not something reasoned through under panic.
