No employer pension. Earning window is finite. You have to build it yourself. Here is the priority order.
12 months of family expenses in liquid FD or savings account. Contracts end without warning. This is non-negotiable before any investment.
₹1–2 crore cover. Ship is a high-risk environment. No employer death benefit beyond P&I. Buy while young and healthy — premiums increase sharply with age.
Long-term wealth building. Set up SIP via NRE account. Passive index funds (Nifty 50, flexi-cap) for those who don't want to track actively. 10+ year horizon.
Merchant Navy has no pension. NPS gives structured retirement income with tax benefits. PPF is safe, 15-year lock-in, fully tax-free at maturity.
Many seafarers buy real estate as first investment. This locks capital with low liquidity. Build financial assets first, real estate when you have surplus.
The P&I cover your company provides ends at sign-off. You are uninsured on leave without your own coverage.
₹1–2 crore cover. Cheapest when young. Pure protection — no investment component. Do not buy ULIP or endowment.
Ship cover stops at sign-off. Need independent health policy valid during leave. Floater policy covering family recommended.
Rider on term plan. Pays lump sum on diagnosis of major illness. Covers income gap during treatment.
Mis-sold aggressively to seafarers. High charges, low returns, inflexible premiums during leave gaps. Not suitable.
