WBJEE 2026 and IMU-CET 2026 clash on the same date. Which exam to prioritize? Honest career comparison and decision guide for West Bengal students.

WBJEE and IMU-CET Same Day 2026: Decision Guide

This got posted in r/kolkata and r/wbjee in the last month — “Please help, WBJEE 2026 and IMU-CET 2026 are scheduled on the same day.”

You can’t appear for both. You must choose. Here’s how to make the right call.

What Each Exam Leads To

WBJEE:

  • West Bengal state engineering colleges (Jadavpur University, Calcutta University affiliated colleges, WB government engineering institutes)
  • Career paths: Traditional engineering, IT, manufacturing, government jobs
  • Outcome quality heavily depends on college + branch combination

IMU-CET:

  • Indian Maritime University admissions (DNS, B.E. Marine Engineering, B.Sc Nautical Science, ETO)
  • Career path: Merchant navy officer → Captain or Chief Engineer
  • Outcome: More defined (maritime officer) with strong salary trajectory

When You Should Choose IMU-CET Over WBJEE

Choose IMU-CET if:

  • Your projected WBJEE rank would land you in a mid/low tier college in a weak branch (not Jadavpur, not good branch)
  • You’re genuinely interested in maritime career — not just escaping WBJEE anxiety
  • Your PCM is strong (65%+) — you have a real shot at a good IMU rank
  • You’ve thought about the lifestyle honestly and are okay with 4–8 months away per year

When You Should Choose WBJEE Over IMU-CET

Choose WBJEE if:

  • You have a strong chance at Jadavpur University or a top Calcutta University affiliated college in Computer Science, Electrical, or Mechanical — the career ROI is very good from these
  • Maritime career genuinely doesn’t interest you
  • Family situation requires you to stay in Bengal
  • You have no interest in sea life — forcing yourself into maritime is a mistake

The Middle Option You Might Not Know About

If you want to hedge: appear for IMU-CET now (May 2026), assess your rank, and make decisions based on results. If you get a top IMU rank (top 500), maritime may be the clearer choice. If your rank is average, you’ve at least had the data.

For IMU-CET, you need 60%+ in PCM. With good WBJEE preparation, you’re already prepared for IMU-CET — the overlap is significant.

What If You Appear for IMU-CET and Change Your Mind?

You don’t have to join even if you get a good rank. Getting a rank and assessing options is perfectly fine. This year’s IMU-CET rank is valid for this admission cycle only — you can’t hold it.
