IMU-CET 2026: Complete Registration & Preparation Guide
IMU-CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test) is the gateway to most maritime officer programs in India. Here’s everything verified from IMU’s official prospectus 2026-27.
Exam Structure (Verified)
- Total questions: 200 MCQs
- Duration: 3 hours
- Subjects: English, General Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
- Negative marking: -0.25 per wrong answer
- Mode: Online (Computer-based)
- Exam window: May 2026
Subject-wise distribution is not fixed by IMU — it varies based on the program you’re applying for. Engineering programs are heavier on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics. DNS/Nautical programs include more aptitude and English.
Eligibility (Key Points)
Age: 17-25 years at time of admission
Academics: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) — minimum 60% aggregate in PCM
Board: Regular boards recognized by COBSE/MHRD. NIOS status — see our separate article on this.
Medical: Colour vision, height, weight requirements as per DG Shipping medical standards
Registration Process
- Visit imu.edu.in — official IMU portal
- Register with valid email and mobile number
- Fill academic details (10th and 12th marks, board)
- Upload documents: 10th marksheet, 12th marksheet (or appearing certificate), passport photo, signature
- Pay application fee: ₹1,000 (General) / ₹500 (SC/ST)
- Download admit card when released (typically 2 weeks before exam)
Important: If you’re appearing for 12th boards, you can register with “appearing” status. You’ll need to submit final marksheet at admission stage.
Negative Marking Strategy — Critical
At -0.25 per wrong answer, the strategy is: attempt when confident, skip when guessing.
Simple math: If you guess randomly among 4 options, the expected score is: +1 x (1/4) + (-0.25) x (3/4) = +0.25 - 0.1875 = +0.0625 per question. Marginally positive, but not worth the risk if you’re already getting a good score.
Practical rule:
- 80%+ confident → attempt
- 40-80% confident → attempt if you can eliminate 2 options
- Below 40% → skip
Attempting 150 questions correctly is better than attempting all 200 with 40 wrong answers.
Subject-Wise Preparation Guide
Mathematics (Highest Weightage for Engineering Programs)
Key topics:
- Coordinate Geometry (straight lines, circles, parabola)
- Calculus: Differentiation and Integration (limits, derivatives, definite integrals)
- Algebra: Sequences, Permutation-Combination, Probability
- Trigonometry: Identities, inverse trig, solution of triangles
- Matrices and Determinants
Best resource: NCERT 11th and 12th Mathematics + HC Verma for competitive practice
Physics
Key topics:
- Mechanics: Rotational motion, Newton’s laws, Work-Energy
- Electricity and Magnetism
- Optics
- Modern Physics: Atomic structure, photoelectric effect
- Waves and Thermodynamics
Strategy: IMU Physics is NCERT-level, not JEE level. NCERT thorough reading + previous year questions is sufficient.
Chemistry
Key topics:
- Organic: Basic concepts, reaction mechanisms, named reactions
- Inorganic: P-block, D-block elements, coordination compounds
- Physical: Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics, Chemical Kinetics
Strategy: NCERT first, then MCQ practice. Don’t over-invest here vs Maths.
English
- Reading comprehension
- Grammar (prepositions, tenses, subject-verb agreement)
- Vocabulary (antonyms, synonyms, idioms)
- Error detection
Strategy: 30 minutes daily newspaper reading + grammar workbook. High return on investment subject.
General Aptitude
- Logical reasoning
- Data interpretation
- Maritime general knowledge (basic — shipping terms, famous ports, IMO)
- Current affairs (last 6 months)
Maritime GK tip: Spend 1 hour reading maritime current affairs on SailorGPT or sailorsuccess.online — this is free marks that most candidates ignore.
30-Day Preparation Plan
Week 1: Foundations
- Mathematics: Coordinate geometry + Trigonometry
- Physics: Mechanics complete
- English: Grammar rules review
Week 2: Core Subjects
- Mathematics: Calculus (differentiation + integration)
- Chemistry: Organic basics + Inorganic highlights
- Aptitude: Logical reasoning practice
Week 3: Advanced Topics
- Mathematics: Algebra + Probability
- Physics: Electricity + Optics
- English: Comprehension practice (2 passages daily)
Week 4: Revision + Mock Tests
- Full length mock test every day (200 questions, 3 hours)
- Review wrong answers — don’t just move on
- Negative marking simulation: practice the skip/attempt decision
Previous Year Analysis
IMU-CET doesn’t officially release previous year papers. However:
- Mathematics typically has the most questions (35-45)
- Physics and Chemistry are each 25-35 questions
- English 20-25 questions
- Aptitude 15-25 questions
These are approximate from candidates’ experience — not official.
