Ship Chandler: What It Means
The word “chandler” originally referred to a candle maker and seller. In the age of sail, candles were essential supplies for ships — and chandlers naturally expanded to supply everything else ships needed. The word stuck.
Today, a ship chandler is a comprehensive port-based supplier.
What Chandlers Supply
Provisions (victualling):
- Fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy
- Dry goods, canned foods
- Beverages
- Fresh water (sometimes separate)
Deck stores:
- Manila and synthetic ropes
- Paint, brushes, anti-corrosion products
- Mooring equipment, shackles
- Safety signs, PPE
Engine stores:
- Filter elements (fuel, lube oil, air)
- Gaskets, O-rings
- Lub oil (if not bunkered separately)
- Cleaning chemicals, solvents
Navigation:
- Navigational charts (paper, updated)
- Pilot books, tide tables
- Spare batteries for instruments
Safety equipment:
- Fire extinguisher service
- Lifeboat pyrotechnics (flares) on expiry
- Medical supplies, first aid kits
Bonded stores:
- Duty-free alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco for crew consumption onboard
Crew welfare:
- Crew personal items (toiletries, SIM cards sometimes)
- Newspapers, books
How Chandling Works in Practice
- 24–48 hours before arrival: Chief Officer and Chief Engineer prepare stores lists based on what’s needed
- Agent contacts chandler: Usually an approved vendor from the company’s approved vendor list
- Quotation and approval: Company purchasing sometimes approves large orders
- Delivery at berth: Chandler delivers by truck alongside the ship
- Receiving: Crew counts and checks items against delivery note
- Signing: Chief Officer or Bosun signs delivery receipt
- Invoice: Sent to ship agent → company → payment
Red Flags to Watch
- Chandler insists on signing before full count — never do this
- “We’ll deliver the rest tomorrow” — get it in writing or don’t sign
- Items not as ordered — refuse and note the substitution
- Unsolicited items on the invoice — contest immediately
