Pumpman Career Guide India: Salary, Duties & How to Become One 2026
The Pumpman is one of the most specialized and best-paid non-officer positions in the merchant navy — found exclusively on tankers (crude, product, chemical, LPG). Yet almost no career content exists for this role. Here’s everything.
What Does a Pumpman Do?
The Pumpman is the specialist responsible for all cargo pump operations and pipeline systems on a tanker.
Core responsibilities:
- Operating and monitoring all cargo pumps during loading and discharging
- Maintaining ballast pumps, stripping pumps, and pipeline systems
- Managing cargo valves, manifolds, and pipeline configurations
- Assisting the Chief Officer in cargo calculations and trim management
- Troubleshooting pump breakdowns and maintaining pump room equipment
- Ensuring cargo transfer proceeds safely and efficiently
- MARPOL compliance — oil record book entries for ballast/slop operations
On a crude oil tanker or product tanker, cargo operations are critically important — millions of dollars of cargo move through the Pumpman’s equipment. A skilled, reliable Pumpman is highly valued.
Pumpman Salary
| Experience | Monthly (INR) | Monthly (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| New Pumpman (first appointment) | ₹85,000–1.2 lakh | $1,000–1,400 |
| Experienced Pumpman (3–5 years) | ₹1.2–1.6 lakh | $1,400–2,000 |
| Senior Pumpman (large crude carrier) | ₹1.5–2.2 lakh | $1,800–2,500 |
This is 40–60% more than an equivalent AB on the same vessel. Pumpman premium is real.
How to Become a Pumpman
Step 1: Join as GP Rating and get assigned to tanker Many future Pumpmen start as GP Rating cadets who are placed on tankers.
Step 2: Work in deck department as OS and AB on tankers Specifically seek tanker contracts — crude, product, chemical. Learn cargo operations hands-on by assisting the existing Pumpman.
Step 3: Complete tanker-specific training
- Basic Tanker Safety (required by STCW for all tanker crew)
- Advanced Crude/Product Tanker Certificate
- Pump room operations familiarization
Step 4: Company appointment as Pumpman After 4–6 years of tanker sea service as AB/senior deck rating, with demonstrated cargo operations competency, companies promote capable ABs to Pumpman role.
There’s no formal examination to become Pumpman — it’s an experiential promotion.
Shortcut: Some companies actively look for ABs with tanker experience to fast-track to Pumpman. If you’re an AB on tankers, let your Chief Officer know you want to learn cargo operations.
Which Companies Hire Indian Pumpmen
Indian Pumpmen work on tankers worldwide. Key employers:
- GE Shipping (Great Eastern): Large Indian tanker fleet
- Essar Shipping: Tanker operations
- Stena Tankers, Nordic Tankers: International operators hiring Indian crew
- Euronav, Frontline: Large crude tanker operators
- Scorpio Tankers, Tsakos (TEN): Product tankers
Manning agents specializing in tanker crew: Bernhard Schulte Ship Management, Anglo-Eastern, Mastermind Shipmanagement.
Pumpman vs. AB: Should You Specialize?
If you’re on tankers as AB and have the chance to learn cargo operations — take it. The specialization:
- Increases your monthly salary by 40–60%
- Makes you more in-demand with tanker companies
- Provides a clear career identity vs. generic deck rating
The only downside: your career becomes more tanker-specific. Switching to container or bulk carrier work later means starting over in some ways.
