The One Question That Decides Everything
Do you want to be an officer or a rating?
-
Officer track: Requires either 12th PCM (for DNS/B.E./ETO cadet) or relevant B.Tech degree (for GME/ETO). Takes 4–6 years to first officer rank. Salary ceiling: $10,000–18,000/month tax-free.
-
Ratings track: Open from 10th pass. Fastest entry. Good earnings (₹40,000–₹1.5 lakh/month). No navigational watch responsibility. Can upgrade to officer later (8–12 year hawsepipe path — see below).
What is a “hawsepipe” path? The hawsepipe is the hole in the ship’s bow that the anchor chain passes through. Coming up through the hawsepipe = starting as the lowest crew member and working your way up to officer through years of experience and study. It’s a metaphor for the long, hard road from rating to officer without formal cadet training.
