GP Rating to Officer: Can You Upgrade? Complete Hawsepipe Guide India 2026
“Can I become an officer if I joined through GP Rating?” — this is the most asked question by ratings in Indian merchant navy, and the most poorly answered.
Short answer: Yes, you can. It’s called the hawsepipe path (named after the hole through which anchor chains pass — a symbol of working your way up from the bottom).
Here’s the honest, step-by-step truth.
What Is the Hawsepipe Path?
The hawsepipe pathway allows experienced deck or engine ratings to qualify as officers through a combination of sea service, examinations, and additional training — without going back to a full pre-sea officer course.
It is slower and harder than the direct officer cadet route. But it’s a legitimate, recognized path used by many officers today.
Deck Side: GP Rating → 3rd Officer (NCV Route)
Step 1: Accumulate sea time as GP Rating / Ordinary Seaman (OS) Target: Minimum 36 months of sea service on deck department
Step 2: Obtain AB Certificate After 12 months as OS + passing COW (Certificate of Watchkeeping) assessment at approved institute — you become formally certified as Able Seaman.
Step 3: More sea service as AB Continue accumulating sea time. DG Shipping requires specific total sea time before appearing for officer examinations from the ratings pathway.
Step 4: Qualify STCW officer-level courses Before sitting for officer exam:
- GMDSS GOC (if deck officer)
- Radar/ARPA
- ECDIS
- PSCRB, AFF (if not already held)
Step 5: Appear for 2nd Mate NCV (Near Coastal Voyage) or FG After meeting sea service requirements, you can appear for the DG Shipping 2nd Mate FG (Foreign Going) written + oral examinations.
Passing 2nd Mate FG effectively gives you 3rd Officer level qualification.
Total timeline: Typically 8–12 years from starting as GP Rating to getting 3rd Officer certificate. Compare with 4–5 years via direct officer cadet route.
Engine Side: GP Rating → MEO Class 4
Step 1: Sea service as Wiper/Oiler — minimum 12–24 months in engine department Step 2: MEO Class 4 (Near Coastal Voyage) written examination Step 3: Pass orals before MMD
MEO Class 4 NCV qualifies you as 4th Engineer on near coastal voyages. To get Foreign Going (unlimited) certificate, additional sea service and MEO Class 4 FG exam is required.
This route is more accessible than deck upgrade — MEO Class 4 NCV has lower sea time requirements from ratings entry and no GMDSS requirement.
The Honest Assessment
Advantages of hawsepipe:
- No large upfront training cost (you earn while you gain sea time)
- Deep practical experience — hawsepipe officers are often very strong technically
- Pride of achievement — working up from the bottom is respected in maritime
Disadvantages:
- Takes 8–12 years vs 4–5 years via direct route
- Miss career momentum compared to direct officer cadets
- Some companies prefer direct-entry officers for promotion to senior ranks
- STCW officer courses (GMDSS especially) require separate time and cost ashore
Is it worth it? If you’re already a rating with 3–4 years sea time and thinking about upgrading — yes, absolutely worth pursuing. The courses and exams are achievable.
If you’re starting from scratch and have 12th PCM — skip the ratings route entirely and go direct officer cadet. It’s faster and better long-term.
