Electrical Engineer to ETO Merchant Navy: Complete Guide India 2026

B.E./B.Tech Electrical Engineering to Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) — eligibility, sponsored vs self-funded course, salary $3000-6000/month, top companies and exam guide.

Electrical Engineer to ETO: Complete Guide for India 2026

Electrical Engineering graduates have one of the clearest lateral entry paths into merchant navy — the ETO (Electro-Technical Officer) route. It’s less talked about than deck or engineering officers, but it’s one of the fastest-growing and well-paid positions onboard modern vessels.

What Does an ETO Do?

The ETO is responsible for all electrical, electronic, and control systems on a modern vessel:

  • Main switchboard and power management systems
  • Navigation electronics: ECDIS, radar, AIS, GMDSS
  • Automation systems: Integrated Bridge Systems (IBS), Engine Room Automation
  • Communication systems: VSAT, SSB radio, internal communications
  • Refrigeration, HVAC electrical systems
  • Safety systems: Fire detection, alarm panels, emergency lighting
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of all electrical equipment

Modern ships are heavily automated. The ETO is essentially the ship’s electrical engineer + electronics technician + IT support, all in one. On larger vessels (LNG carriers, large container ships), ETO is a senior technical position.

Eligibility for ETO Cadetship

DG Shipping / IMU recognized qualifications:

  • B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering — best positioned
  • B.E./B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering — widely accepted
  • B.E./B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • B.E./B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering — some companies accept

Minimum marks: Most companies require 55–60% aggregate. Top companies (Maersk, V.Ships) prefer 65%+.

Age: Typically up to 28–30 years for sponsored cadetship.

Note on B.Tech Computer Science: As discussed in the CS guide — some companies accept, most don’t. Electrical or Electronics is the clean route.

The ETO Course Structure

Phase 1 — Pre-sea Course (4–6 months): At DG Shipping approved institute:

  • Marine electrical systems
  • High voltage safety training (for larger vessels)
  • GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System)
  • Navigation electronics
  • Engine room automation
  • STCW Basic Safety Training

Phase 2 — Sea Service (minimum 12 months as ETO Cadet)

Phase 3 — ETO Certification: After sea service, ETO Certificate of Competency issued by DG Shipping MMD.

Sponsored cadetship (ideal): Company pays for your pre-sea training + guarantees first contract. Competitive — you’ll interview against other B.E. graduates.

Top companies offering sponsored ETO programs:

  • Wallem Group
  • Anglo-Eastern
  • Bernhard Schulte Ship Management
  • Fleet Management Limited
  • V.Ships
  • Synergy Marine Group

Self-funded: Pay for pre-sea course yourself (₹3–6 lakh at recognized institutes), then apply for jobs. Less guaranteed placement but you’re not tied to one company.

Reality check: Self-funded ETO route with a degree from a less-recognized institute + below 60% marks often leads to placements at smaller companies paying less. Sponsored route at a reputable company is significantly better long-term.

ETO Salary

ExperienceMonthly (USD)Monthly (INR, NRI)
ETO Cadet/Trainee ETO$1,800–2,500₹1.5–2.1 lakh
Junior ETO (1–3 years)$3,000–4,500₹2.5–3.75 lakh
Senior ETO (4–8 years)$4,500–6,000₹3.75–5 lakh
ETO on LNG/Large vessels$5,500–7,500₹4.6–6.25 lakh

All tax-free for NRI seafarers (182+ days outside India in financial year).

ETO vs Marine Engineer: Which Is Better?

Senior salary$5,500–7,500 (Senior ETO)$9,000–18,000 (Chief Engineer)

If your degree is Electrical — ETO is your path. Don’t try to shoehorn into marine engineering via GME when ETO is a clean, direct route.

What About “High Voltage ETO”?

Larger vessels (VLCCs, large container ships, LNG carriers) have high voltage systems (3.3kV, 6.6kV, 11kV). HV endorsement requires additional HV Safety course.

HV qualified ETOs earn 15–25% more than standard ETO. If you’re aiming for the top of ETO salary range — plan to get HV certification after your first few years.
