Bosun Career Guide India: Salary, Duties & How to Become One

Everything about Bosun in Indian merchant navy — what they do, salary ₹1.2L–₹2.5L/month, how to reach Bosun rank, and why it's one of the best deck rating careers.

Bosun Career Guide India: Salary, Duties & Becoming One 2026

The Bosun (Boatswain) is the most senior deck rating on any merchant vessel — the foreman of the deck crew, the master of seamanship, and the direct link between junior ratings and deck officers. It’s one of the most respected non-officer positions on a ship.

What Does a Bosun Actually Do?

The Bosun’s core responsibility is supervising and directing all deck maintenance and seamanship work under the Chief Officer’s authority.

Daily duties:

  • Supervising AB (Able Seaman), OS (Ordinary Seaman), and trainee ratings in all deck work
  • Directing painting, rust treatment, and hull maintenance programs
  • Managing deck stores, mooring equipment, ropes, and wire maintenance
  • Overseeing anchor operations during anchoring/weighing anchor
  • Mooring operations — directing line-handling gang during port operations
  • Maintaining lifesaving equipment: lifeboats, life rafts, rescue boat
  • Carrying out Chief Officer’s maintenance orders through the deck crew
  • On some vessels: stand-in for watch duty if crew is short

The Bosun is essentially the “working supervisor” — not on the bridge giving navigation orders, but on deck getting things done and making sure the crew does it safely and correctly.

Bosun Salary in India

Experience LevelMonthly (INR)On Foreign Flag
New Bosun (first appointment)₹80,000–1.2 lakh$1,500–2,000/month
Experienced Bosun (5+ years)₹1.2–1.8 lakh$2,000–2,500/month
Senior Bosun (large vessel, foreign flag)₹1.5–2.2 lakh$2,500–3,000/month

Compared to an Able Seaman earning ₹80,000–1.2 lakh, Bosun represents a significant step up — with more authority and better compensation.

Career Path to Bosun

GP Rating/OS (Ordinary Seaman)
→ AB (Able Seaman) [requires watchkeeping certificate + sea time]
→ Senior AB / Leading Hand
→ Bosun [typically 6–10 years total sea time]

No formal examination is required to become Bosun — it’s a promotion based on:

  • Sea time accumulated (typically 5–8 years as AB)
  • Demonstrated seamanship skills
  • Leadership ability and company confidence
  • Good conduct record (no disciplinary issues)

Companies appoint Bosuns from their pool of experienced ABs. The path is purely merit and seniority based.

Qualifications That Help

While no mandatory exam exists for Bosun, holding these improves promotion chances:

  • Certificate of Watchkeeping (COW): Required to become AB — foundation for Bosun track
  • Able Seaman Certificate (Deck Watch): Formally recognizes AB level competency
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSCRB): Often required for senior ratings
  • Advanced Firefighting: Bosuns often lead fire parties — having AFF certificate helps

Bosun on Different Vessel Types

Bulk carriers: Heavy deck maintenance work — painting, rust treatment, hatch cover maintenance. Traditional Bosun role at its most demanding.

Container ships: Fast-paced, often complex lashing and securing work for containers. Good for experienced Bosuns who like organised systematic work.

Tankers: Deck maintenance includes pipeline and valve maintenance. Bosun coordinates with Pumpman during port operations.

Large LNG/LPG carriers: Premium salary. Bosun on these vessels earns at the top of the range.

Bosun vs. Junior Officer: The Real Comparison

Many senior ABs and Bosuns consider trying to upgrade to officer (3rd Officer/4th Engineer). The honest comparison:

If you’re an experienced AB considering upgrade — calculate the actual years and cost before deciding. Some prefer Bosun life without the exam pressure and shore course expense.
