Able Seaman (AB) Career Guide India: Salary, Duties & Upgrade Path 2026
Able Seaman (AB) is the core deck rating role — the backbone of every merchant vessel’s deck department. Here’s the complete honest guide.
What Is an Able Seaman?
AB is the experienced deck watchkeeper and all-round deck worker. Unlike Ordinary Seaman (OS) who is still learning, the AB is considered fully competent in all standard seamanship duties.
Daily duties of an AB:
- Standing watch on the bridge at sea as lookout (in addition to officer)
- Mooring operations — handling lines, operating winches
- Anchor operations — windlass handling
- Deck maintenance — chipping, painting, greasing, cleaning
- Cargo handling support — lashing, securing, hatch cover operation
- Emergency duties — firefighting party, rescue boat crew, lifeboat crew
- Maintenance of lifesaving appliances
- Assisting Chief Officer in all deck maintenance programs
ABs are the hands of the Chief Officer — experienced enough to be trusted with independent tasks but not yet responsible for navigational decisions.
AB vs OS: What’s the Difference?
| Factor | OS (Ordinary Seaman) | AB (Able Seaman) |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | First 9–12 months typically | 1–3+ years of sea service |
| Certificate | None / basic | Certificate of Watchkeeping (COW) |
| Salary | ₹30,000–55,000 | ₹65,000–1.2 lakh |
| Responsibilities | Learning, supervised | Can work independently |
| Watch duty | Sometimes | Full bridge/deck watch |
How to Get AB Certificate
The formal path to AB certification requires:
- Sea service: Minimum 12 months as OS/deck rating
- Watchkeeping Certificate (COW): Short course at DG-approved institute demonstrating deck watchkeeping competency
- Basic Safety Training (BST): All 4 STCW basic courses must be valid
- Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSCRB): Required before AB certificate in most cases
After meeting these, the AB certificate is applied for at MMD.
AB Salary in India
| Experience | Vessel Type | Monthly (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh AB | Indian flag | ₹55,000–75,000 |
| AB (2–3 years) | Foreign flag | $800–1,200/month (₹65,000–1 lakh) |
| Senior AB (5+ years) | Foreign flag tanker/LNG | $1,000–1,500/month (₹83,000–1.25 lakh) |
Annual take-home (6-month contract, foreign flag, NRI): A competent AB earning $1,000/month × 6 months = $6,000 ≈ ₹5 lakh tax-free per contract.
AB Career Progression Options
Track 1: Bosun Most natural progression. With 6–10 years as AB and demonstrated seamanship leadership → promoted to Bosun (see Bosun guide for details).
Track 2: Hawsepipe to 3rd Officer After accumulating sufficient sea service + completing officer-level STCW courses + passing 2nd Mate exam → deck officer qualification.
- Slower (8–12 years total)
- But fully achievable
Track 3: Stay at AB Many ABs are content in their role — good pay, predictable work, no exam pressure, good work-life balance during sea time. Not a failure — a valid choice.
Which Companies Are Best for ABs?
For rapid promotion to Bosun: Companies with large bulk carrier or tanker fleets where Bosun vacancies exist more frequently.
For best AB salary: European managed companies, especially those on LNG, chemical tankers.
For good working conditions: Companies with ISM Code compliance, proper manning, and respect for MLC 2006 rights. Avoid small companies with poor safety records.
Tip: Seafarers.com and Martide both have good AB listings. Network with existing ABs on your current company to hear which fleets have Bosun vacancies.
