Dynamic Positioning (DP) Career Guide 2026
Dynamic Positioning (DP) is the skill that separates ordinary offshore vessel officers from highly paid specialists. DP-certified officers earn 30β60% more than equivalently ranked non-DP officers. Here is everything you need to know.
What Is Dynamic Positioning?
Dynamic Positioning is an automated system that uses thrusters, GPS, wind sensors, and motion sensors to maintain a vesselβs position and heading automatically β without anchors.
Where itβs essential:
- Offshore drilling rigs and drillships (holding position while drilling a well)
- Pipe-laying vessels (precise position control during pipeline installation)
- Diving support vessels (holding station over dive site)
- Offshore wind turbine installation vessels
- Cable-laying ships
- Semi-submersible crane vessels
Why it matters: Working over a subsea wellhead in 1,000 metres of water with a 3-metre sea state, anchoring is impossible. DP is what keeps the ship on station.
The DP Classification System
IMO publishes DP equipment classes:
| Class | Redundancy | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| DP Class 1 | No redundancy | Simple positioning tasks |
| DP Class 2 | Can survive single equipment failure | Most offshore support vessels |
| DP Class 3 | Can survive single compartment failure (fire/flood) | Drilling ships, crane vessels |
Most offshore companies require DP Class 2 vessels. DP Class 3 operators are the most in-demand and highest paid.
The Nautical Institute DP Certification Pathway
The Nautical Institute (NI) administers the internationally recognised DP certification system. There are two levels:
DPJP (DP Junior Practitioner / Induction Certificate)
The first certificate β entry requirement for DP sea time:
- Attend a DPO Induction Course (NI approved) β typically 4β5 days
- Cost: βΉ45,000 β βΉ80,000 depending on training centre
- Upon completion: DPJP certificate β this allows you to log DP sea time
Key point: The DPJP is NOT a full DP certificate. It is the induction that allows you to start logging supervised DP time. You need to get on DP vessels to progress.
DPDP (DP Practitioner / Full Certificate)
The full DP certificate β enables you to work as a DPO (DP Operator):
Requirements to convert DPJP to DPDP:
- 30 days on DP vessels in DP mode (as trainee, supervised)
- 1 year of sea service in eligible rank after induction
- Pass the Nautical Institute online assessment
- Complete 1 simulator day at NI approved centre
Once you hold DPDP: You are a qualified DP Operator. Companies will pay a DP premium.
Cost for full DP pathway: βΉ80,000 β βΉ1.5 lakh total (induction + simulator + assessment fees)
Who Is Eligible for DP Certification?
Deck Officers: OOW-level (2nd Mate or above) preferred. Some companies accept cadets with significant DP sea time for induction.
Dynamic Positioning Operators onshore: Some ROV pilots and DP watch officers come from non-officer backgrounds, but the most demand is for licensed deck officers.
Engine officers: Can do DP courses (DP Technician β different from DPO), but main DPO demand is for deck.
DP Salary Premium
| Rank | Without DP | With DPDP Certificate |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd Officer | $3,500β4,500/month | $4,500β6,500/month |
| Chief Officer | $6,000β8,000/month | $7,500β11,000/month |
| Master (DP vessel) | $9,000β12,000/month | $12,000β18,000/month |
Note: These are for offshore vessels (OSV, AHTS, DSV, drillships). The premium is over conventional cargo ship rates for the same rank.
How to Get Your First DP Job
The catch-22: DP employers want DP experience, but you canβt get DP experience without being hired on a DP vessel.
How to break in:
- Get DPJP certificate first β this shows initiative
- Apply to companies that run mixed fleets (some DP, some non-DP) β start on conventional vessels and request transfer
- Target companies specifically known for developing DP officers: Bourbon Maritime, Tidewater, Hornbeck, Siem Offshore, CHOR (Chinese offshore), Sapura Marine
- Apply to cadet programs that include DP sea time (some offshore companies run these specifically for fresh DNACs)
Indian companies with DP vessels:
- ONGC (Offshore supply vessels β some DP)
- Aban Offshore (AHTS)
- Selan Exploration
Most Indian offshore DP work is with international companies operating in Indian waters or abroad.
DP Approved Training Centres in India (NI Approved)
- Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies (SIMS), Mumbai β NI approved DP simulator
- Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy, Mumbai β NI approved
- HIMT, Chennai β NI approved
